[2008/04/25 11:05] IM: Fleep Tuque: laugh, alas no, I think that is perhaps the one item NOT buried somewhere in my inventory. :)
[2008/04/25 11:05] IM: Rose Springvale: rats. looking for one!
[2008/04/25 11:05] IM: Olando7 Decosta: would it be illegal to throw rotten tomatoes to a us senator?
[2008/04/25 11:05] IM: Troy McLuhan: I think I saw a steam-powered tomator-thrower / hat-duster in Caledon someplace
[2008/04/25 11:05] Larry Pixel: lol
[2008/04/25 11:05] IM: Yxes Delacroix: there will be no tomatoes, unless you are gonna make sandwiches for us all.
[2008/04/25 11:05] IM: Fleep Tuque: :)
[2008/04/25 11:05] IM: Malburns Writer: what about fresh tomatoes?

[2008/04/25 11:06] IM: Wiz Nordberg: sort by odor and keep the old ones at the bottom
[2008/04/25 11:06] IM: Tex Rhode: I'd like bacon and lettuce with mine, please\
[2008/04/25 11:06] Salem Sella: I am looking for at least 2 more members
[2008/04/25 11:06] Chimera Cosmos: not really -- or I won't confess to it :-)
[2008/04/25 11:06] IM: Intellagirl Tully: what a great turn out!
[2008/04/25 11:06] IM: Tex Rhode: Yxes, you were a faster than me on that one :-)
[2008/04/25 11:07] Dirk Talamasca shouts: GO LARRY! GOOOOOO!!!!
and you'll be REALLY impressed :-)
[2008/04/25 11:21] IM: Perplexity Peccable: pricing attractive, 40 educational communities
[2008/04/25 11:21] IM: Stargazer Blazer: ty for the stream, Wiz.
[2008/04/25 11:21] IM: Fleep Tuque: I have to say, NMC gets such good word of mouth press because they provide so much of benefit to the edu community, at least here in world
[2008/04/25 11:22] IM: Perplexity Peccable: "we're about helping institutions learn how to use this space"
[2008/04/25 11:22] IM: Perplexity Peccable: "we're very careful NOT to sell our services" "that's not what we're about"
[2008/04/25 11:22] IM: Fleep Tuque: They were primary sponsors of the Best Practices in Education conference and offer a TON of resources. Corporate entities could take a hint, provide real value to your target audience and they'll pay you back with the best form of brand interaction and self generated advertising.
[2008/04/25 11:24] IM: CDB Barkley: See NMC's history in SL at http://sl.nmc.org/
[2008/04/25 11:24] IM: Fleep Tuque: I think too the collaborative nature - highlighting the work of others, sharing the results of their experience - I don't see many of the big name brands engaging with the community in that way.
[2008/04/25 11:24] IM: Perplexity Peccable: "when you don't need shelter, what's the purpose of architecture?"
[2008/04/25 11:24] IM: Alanagh Recreant rejoins Metanomics, excited about work of NMC...
[2008/04/25 11:25] IM: Valiant Westland: Esthetics!
[2008/04/25 11:25] IM: Perplexity Peccable: shaping a kind of interaction
[2008/04/25 11:25] IM: IYan Writer: Hi Alanagh! (check out new Virtual Africa sim if you had not yet seen it all - after the show of course! :)
[2008/04/25 11:26] IM: Stargazer Blazer: Fleep, I think it's a focus on what they can get out of virtual worlds versus what they can bring to the community.
[2008/04/25 11:26] IM: CDB Barkley: http://wp.nmc.org/mrpixel Mr Pixel Goes to Washington
[2008/04/25 11:26] IM: CDB Barkley: Larry's full testimony in CommentPress format
[2008/04/25 11:26] IM: Valiant Westland: A great environment that is a pleasure to look at stimulates "higher" thought, just as the music of Mozart has been shown to improve concentration and creativity
[2008/04/25 11:27] IM: arabella Ella: so much potential for getting education up to scratch and motivate learners here on SL
[2008/04/25 11:27] IM: Nasus Dumart: Well said Valiant
[2008/04/25 11:27] IM: Perplexity Peccable: "what kind of niche do we need to have to be a leader?"
[2008/04/25 11:27] IM: Perplexity Peccable: "US is 19th in the world in e-access delivered to citizens"
[2008/04/25 11:27] IM: Corvuscorva Nightfire: One of the things that I have loved about SL, is how the environments stimulate conversation aout esthetics and values.
[2008/04/25 11:27] Komuso Tokugawa: more like 100
[2008/04/25 11:27] IM: Troy McLuhan: There's "broadband" and then there's *broadband*
[2008/04/25 11:28] IM: Perplexity Peccable: "Japan's network is 10 times as fast as US and can be 50x"
[2008/04/25 11:28] IM: Alanagh Recreant agrees with Troy
[2008/04/25 11:28] IM: Perplexity Peccable: yes - broadband
[2008/04/25 11:28] IM: Fleep Tuque: Nod Troy
[2008/04/25 11:28] IM: Perplexity Peccable: mobile broadband everywhere else in the world is a very different product than in the US - Larry said
[2008/04/25 11:28] IM: Alanagh Recreant: yes! true ;)
[2008/04/25 11:28] IM: Butterflyrose Jewell: what speed do you get in the us? i am in OZ
[2008/04/25 11:28] IM: Valiant Westland: Here's something more fun... "Make sure you employ a trusted mechanic to work on your "motor" neurons!"
[2008/04/25 11:29] IM: Tao Takashi: mainly it's expensive ;-)
[2008/04/25 11:29] Hour Destiny: Shoddy is par for the course.
[2008/04/25 11:29] IM: Tammy Nowotny: maybe things will change once analog TV gts off next yera... of course many people will just stop watching conventional TV and rely on streamed video and maybe even (old skoll) DVDs
[2008/04/25 11:29] Dirk Talamasca shouts: You tell em Larry!!!
[2008/04/25 11:29] IM: Perplexity Peccable: "not adding enough base capacity"
[2008/04/25 11:29] IM: Chimera Cosmos: yipee! got my own seat!
[2008/04/25 11:29] IM: Fleep Tuque: Well, Last Mile Wiring is no longer the big hot topic it was even though lots of rural areas still don't have access to even "broadband", let along *broadband*
[2008/04/25 11:29] IM: Perplexity Peccable: "every year falling further and further down the hole"
[2008/04/25 11:29] IM: Tammy Nowotny: that may have a bigger effect than anyone realizes
[2008/04/25 11:30] IM: Fleep Tuque: I know folks 10 miles from a small town with broadband who can't get anything but satellite at home.
[2008/04/25 11:30] IM: Olando7 Decosta: who should pay for the infrastructure?
[2008/04/25 11:30] IM: Perplexity Peccable: yep
[2008/04/25 11:30] IM: Perplexity Peccable: Larry thinks it should be governemnt
[2008/04/25 11:30] IM: Fleep Tuque: They end up staying at work all hours to get access to the pipeline, that's ridiculous
[2008/04/25 11:30] IM: Butterflyrose Jewell: terrible
[2008/04/25 11:30] IM: CDB Barkley: Canada did
[2008/04/25 11:30] IM: Olando7 Decosta: nationalizing it?
[2008/04/25 11:30] IM: Buffy Beale: yes BC gov is
[2008/04/25 11:30] IM: Perplexity Peccable: nationalizing the *baseline*
[2008/04/25 11:31] IM: Perplexity Peccable: people can pay for extra
[2008/04/25 11:31] IM: Butterflyrose Jewell: australia is 10 SM smaller and we have broadband all over (well most places)
[2008/04/25 11:31] IM: Alanagh Recreant: please define lobbyist... is that the same as an advocate?
[2008/04/25 11:31] Hydra Shaftoe: / heh taxes
[2008/04/25 11:31] Lyday Latte: national security?
[2008/04/25 11:31] IM: Alanagh Recreant: are we not all lobbyist in some form, for some issue?
[2008/04/25 11:31] IM: Perplexity Peccable: lobbyist is a formal role
[2008/04/25 11:31] Multi Gadget v1.52.0 by Timeless Prototype
[2008/04/25 11:32] Lyday Latte runs for her plane!
[2008/04/25 11:32] IM: Fleep Tuque: In the US, lobbyist refers specifically to attempts to influence legislation or legislators
[2008/04/25 11:32] IM: Olando7 Decosta: I believe cory ondrejka was involved in the preparation of the hearing no?
[2008/04/25 11:32] IM: Perplexity Peccable: making requests of government for a specific group - you "lobby" on behalf of a specific group
[2008/04/25 11:32] IM: Alanagh Recreant: like in UK government...Perplexity? lobby for laws?
[2008/04/25 11:32] IM: Perplexity Peccable: yes
[2008/04/25 11:32] IM: Fleep Tuque: It has a formal definition
[2008/04/25 11:32] IM: Perplexity Peccable: What Fleep said :)
[2008/04/25 11:32] IM: Tammy Nowotny: well the orgamization is charterred under a provision of tax law which forbids them to do lobbying... although advocacy is allowed. it can be a fuzzy line
[2008/04/25 11:32] IM: arabella Ella: we disseminate information
[2008/04/25 11:32] IM: Fleep Tuque: legal one
[2008/04/25 11:32] IM: 57 Miles: i see you
[2008/04/25 11:32] IM: Alanagh Recreant: ahhh... we need more of that here in Africa - not much of it
[2008/04/25 11:32] IM: Stargazer Blazer: lobbyists go to Washington and talk to congresspeople. They are usually paid a lot to do the job, and try to get congresspeople to vote their way.
[2008/04/25 11:32] IM: Alanagh Recreant: thanks all!
[2008/04/25 11:32] IM: Tammy Nowotny: (presumably... I haven't checked out the group pesonally)
[2008/04/25 11:32] IM: Hydra Shaftoe: The government has one thing in mind, and that's how to make money off of virtual worlds.
[2008/04/25 11:32] IM: Fleep Tuque: Wikipedia says Since 1995, under the federal Lobbying Disclosure Act (2 U.S.C. § 1601–1612), most persons who are paid to make direct "lobbying contacts" with members of Congress and officials of the federal executive branch are required to register and file reports twice a year.
[2008/04/25 11:32] IM: Alanagh Recreant: I am covered
[2008/04/25 11:33] Multi Gadget v1.52.0 by Timeless Prototype
[2008/04/25 11:33] Julynn Lilliehook: /keep the feds out of SL!
[2008/04/25 11:34] IM: Nasus Dumart: Avaholic!! classic!
[2008/04/25 11:34] IM: Perplexity Peccable: "My name is Larry Johnson and I have an avatar."
[2008/04/25 11:34] IM: arabella Ella: i have an avi too
[2008/04/25 11:34] IM: Perplexity Peccable: "the game taint"
[2008/04/25 11:34] IM: CDB Barkley: I have 3
[2008/04/25 11:34] IM: Nasus Dumart: My names is Nasus Dumart and I have a human
[2008/04/25 11:34] IM: Alanagh Recreant ponders making a t-shirt like that irl
[2008/04/25 11:34] IM: Stargazer Blazer << Fleep fan
[2008/04/25 11:34] IM: Perplexity Peccable: the immortal Fleep ...
[2008/04/25 11:35] IM: Fleep Tuque: Hehe I wonder what Larry thinks!
[2008/04/25 11:35] IM: Hydra Shaftoe: One serious concern I see is that the US is falling behind the rest of the world technologially, and the 3D internet is a very symbolic golden calf for that. I believe countries like China very much realize this, and hence why they're pumping so much money into HipiHi.
[2008/04/25 11:35] IM: CDB Barkley: I work for NMC and wear a dog avatar
[2008/04/25 11:35] IM: Olando7 Decosta: lol
[2008/04/25 11:35] IM: Tammy Nowotny: basically, taxwise... all political groups are non-profits... but if you want deductions to be deductible by the donors, you have to avoid certain types of politucal activity
[2008/04/25 11:36] IM: Tara Yeats: Heeck, Julyn, I can't take myself seriously wearing 'em anywhere!
[2008/04/25 11:36] IM: Hydra Shaftoe: Even Canada is investing way more into virtual words than the US
[2008/04/25 11:36] IM: Perplexity Peccable: Ditto - hipihi looks neat - but not for Macs :(
[2008/04/25 11:36] IM: Julynn Lilliehook: keep the feds out
[2008/04/25 11:36] IM: Eoin Blessed: There are more Canadians every day in SL - I keep tripping over mes amis
[2008/04/25 11:36] IM: Perplexity Peccable: Larry is not asking them to come into VW, but to affirm the basic network integratity and speed
[2008/04/25 11:36] IM: Perplexity Peccable: integrity
[2008/04/25 11:37] IM: Ellie Brewster: Salut!
[2008/04/25 11:37] Hour Destiny: Still new to many. :)
[2008/04/25 11:37] IM: Julynn Lilliehook winks at Tara
[2008/04/25 11:37] IM: Fleep Tuque: Agree with what Larry is saying, some day it shouldn't matter what your avatar looks like
[2008/04/25 11:37] IM: Timecat Hotaling: i got hooked cause im a old the sims addict
[2008/04/25 11:37] IM: Perplexity Peccable: Bonjour, Ellie! :)
[2008/04/25 11:37] IM: Eoin Blessed: 2015 is supposed to be the drop-dead date, isn't it, when the Internet fails, due to all the streaming HiDef vids etc?
[2008/04/25 11:37] IM: Timecat Hotaling: ditto
[2008/04/25 11:37] IM: Olando7 Decosta: very true what larry is saying, topics in sl don't have to be virtual worlds or sl all the time
[2008/04/25 11:37] IM: Cindy Ecksol: it will ALWAYS matter what your av looks like!
[2008/04/25 11:37] IM: Ellie Brewster: Bonjour, ma belle!
[2008/04/25 11:37] IM: Timecat Hotaling: as long as it has shoes
[2008/04/25 11:37] IM: Alanagh Recreant: Hydra, your comment of the USA falling behind technologically.... is that related to the existing infrastructure being maintained by global companies? And WiFi not being promoted, like in Africa at the moment?
[2008/04/25 11:37] IM: Fleep Tuque: laugh, I mean that you shouldn't have to wear a suit n tie type look to be taken seriously
[2008/04/25 11:37] IM: Perplexity Peccable: :)
[2008/04/25 11:38] Haplo Eberhart: the aavatars move around way too much
[2008/04/25 11:38] IM: Perplexity Peccable: Brains count
[2008/04/25 11:38] IM: Julynn Lilliehook: /or a big weiner
[2008/04/25 11:38] IM: Fleep Tuque: (And I should note, my talk yesterday was in the context of pitching virtual worlds to stakeholders who don't know much about it)
[2008/04/25 11:38] IM: Buffy Beale: looks wont matter when the next genners take over
[2008/04/25 11:38] Amilie Anatine shouts: HI please take a seat, just right click and sit on a red chair
[2008/04/25 11:38] IM: Hydra Shaftoe: There was a news spot on CNN this morning about college students not being able to attend classes due to high gas prices. One woman just casually mentioned she's going to some classes in second life, but the focus of he news piece was on gas prices. I see *THAT* as real progress, and SL being accepted mainstream as just part of the web. THAT is real progress for us.
[2008/04/25 11:38] IM: Cindy Ecksol: doesn't take a suit and tie....but there are definitely parameters that work better than others
[2008/04/25 11:38] Amilie Anatine shouts: or stand in one place if you are more comfortable
[2008/04/25 11:38] IM: IYan Writer: hydra: very cool
[2008/04/25 11:38] IM: Fleep Tuque: That's a good point, Hydra
[2008/04/25 11:38] IM: Perplexity Peccable: would love more info on that Hydra
[2008/04/25 11:38] IM: Timecat Hotaling: nods
[2008/04/25 11:39] IM: Julynn Lilliehook does not wear panties in SL
[2008/04/25 11:39] IM: Hydra Shaftoe: its on my twitter. hydravelsen
[2008/04/25 11:39] IM: Valiant Westland: I have the priviledge of serving the people in my community as an elected official. Rather than try to keep government out, I respectfully suggest we want them engaged and using the environment to communicate better, but prevent them from "controlling" it by virtue of the FCC, etc.
[2008/04/25 11:39] IM: Fleep Tuque: laugh
[2008/04/25 11:39] IM: CDB Barkley: Avoid absolutes
[2008/04/25 11:39] IM: Nicole Tarber There are no absolutes =)
[2008/04/25 11:39] IM: Perplexity Peccable: And Desi Stockton
[2008/04/25 11:40] IM: Julynn Lilliehook: careful carfeful
[2008/04/25 11:40] IM: Perplexity Peccable: Barbie with Brains
[2008/04/25 11:40] IM: Julynn Lilliehook: oh...you mean no tweed in SL?
[2008/04/25 11:40] IM: Veeyawn Spoonhammer: No pleated pants either
[2008/04/25 11:40] IM: Perplexity Peccable: I can find tweed :)
[2008/04/25 11:40] IM: Nicole Tarber feels itchy at the thought Julynn
[2008/04/25 11:40] IM: Salem Sella: Clients would ratehr deal with a human in business dress and not a dragin or a garilla.
[2008/04/25 11:40] IM: IYan Writer: we just go straight to plaid
[2008/04/25 11:40] IM: Stargazer Blazer: Or change your avatar to go with what you are teaching....
[2008/04/25 11:40] IM: JenzZa Misfit: ......ok but my suspenders ! I will NOT give up ! no !
[2008/04/25 11:40] IM: Norma Underwood: I got treated rudely at ISTE just because I had on a nice dress
[2008/04/25 11:41] IM: Cindy Ecksol: yes, stargazer!
[2008/04/25 11:41] IM: Timecat Hotaling: Im a child avator
[2008/04/25 11:41] IM: Dirk Talamasca: Desi is an awesome lady. Get her on the show Beyers!!!
[2008/04/25 11:41] IM: Alanagh Recreant: I agree Salem... but there is the potential that at some stage it won't matter...
[2008/04/25 11:41] IM: Valiant Westland: Agreed Stargazer!
[2008/04/25 11:41] IM: Timecat Hotaling: so i get a lot of grief

[2008/04/25 11:41] IM: Perplexity Peccable: Kitty wears stunning dresses at ISTE
[2008/04/25 11:41] IM: Cindy Ecksol: oh, no! not the gorilla, beyers!
[2008/04/25 11:41] IM: CDB Barkley: Dogs rule
[2008/04/25 11:41] IM: Alanagh Recreant is a warthog when needed...
[2008/04/25 11:41] IM: JenzZa Misfit: *yikes*
[2008/04/25 11:41] Hydra Shaftoe: Everyone is welcome to join the Metanomics group. just pull up search, hit groups tab, then search for "Metanomics" and join the group to join us in the back chat. metanomics is a primier virtual worlds discussion forum
[2008/04/25 11:41] Lyday Latte: Also consider visibility of people with disabilities here in SL
[2008/04/25 11:41] IM: Norma Underwood: no, it wasn't, they thought I could not hear them
[2008/04/25 11:41] IM: Alaya Kumaki: salem u should see LL avatars
[2008/04/25 11:41] IM: Perplexity Peccable: I am sorry.
[2008/04/25 11:41] IM: arabella Ella: image always matters in today's media society
[2008/04/25 11:41] IM: Sloan Skjellerup: Welcome Niamh Babii!
[2008/04/25 11:41] Thursday Xu: bugeja is just trying to grab attention.
[2008/04/25 11:42] IM: Perplexity Peccable: I have never experienced rudeness at ISTE
[2008/04/25 11:42] IM: Niamh Babii: thanx!

[2008/04/25 11:42] IM: Valiant Westland: I've heard of a "world class" builder here in SL who uses a "rabbit" avatar, so he has a better perspective for ground-level terrain detail!

[2008/04/25 11:43] IM: Nicole Tarber: How you present yourself in any forum, is a highly personal thing, and everyone RL/SL has their reasons for their choices. It should be respected...but then again I tend to bend on the 'make the world a better place and don't prejudge' anyone here or in the 'world with dirt'
[2008/04/25 11:43] IM: Timecat Hotaling: I love seeign new different avators
[2008/04/25 11:44] IM: Salem Sella: I do nto do any business as my racign snail avatar. That is nt the time or place and clients would feel intimadated to be talking ot a giant snail.
[2008/04/25 11:44] IM: CDB Barkley: Most common negative experiences - lonliness, fear of being naked!

[2008/04/25 11:45] IM: Salem Sella: What message would this give the client?
[2008/04/25 11:45] IM: Bilbe Gaffer: There are of course shady places but harassment can't take place on your university's web site, but it could take place on your institution's island.

[2008/04/25 11:46] IM: Hydra Shaftoe: A lot of the problems with developing virtual worlds in America is paranoia. Gutting an entire economic sector because one kid finds a pedophile there is really hitting a tack with a sledgehammer.
[2008/04/25 11:46] IM: Alanagh Recreant has been surprised... that not more people have asked me 'are you white/black' ? I have been analysing that... may blog on it, as it is distincly different from experiences in IRC in the early 80s - meaning the world is moving on!

[2008/04/25 11:46] IM: Valiant Westland: re: " virtual wordl are sure noting like real worlds"... I suggest that may be a factor of which part of the Metaverse you are in and how you approach it...

[2008/04/25 11:47] IM: Timecat Hotaling: nod sighs i miss tv
[2008/04/25 11:47] IM: Hydra Shaftoe: yeah Stargazer. I'm always a wolf in SL but people dont judge me on that. They judge me on what I do. You can be a cube of jello for all anyone cares.
[2008/04/25 11:48] IM: Alanagh Recreant: I agree Star!!
[2008/04/25 11:48] IM: Fleep Tuque: At least within what I think of as the "core SL community" and not including the "tourists"
