Olando7 Decosta: facilitators of the journey of the learning....
Veritas Variscan: grins
Clare Lane: I have same thing
JenzZa Misfit: *** post your questions in public chat and we will get them to Beyers *** TO ASK YOUR QUESTIONS, type them in open local chat. Preface it with the word QUESTION:
KJ Hax: Here is Maggie's lab: http://flickr.com/photos/kjarrett/453739174/in/photostream/
NergizK: Are these projects Peggy is talking on the Teen Grid?
Bjorlyn Loon: TEEN SECOND LIFE: A Virtual World for Teens: http://teen.secondlife.com/
Fleep Tuque: Yes, NergizK
Fleep Tuque: The Ramapo Islands project is on the Teen Grid
NergizK: Thanks!
Scottmerrick Oh: /great job, Peggy!
Dancer Morris: how do educators handle the age issue? At the low end of the range, students who are ineligible because they are too young; at the high end, students who turn 18 and get kicked out of the Teen Grid?
Maggie Marat: yes Ramapo Islands are on the Teen Grid and they are a private estate
Maggie Marat: but the StryWorld is onthe Main grid so that we could "show it off"
Bjorlyn Loon: KATHY SCHROCK’S LIGHTHOUSE LEARNING BLOG:
http://nausetschools.org/lighthouselearning/
NergizK: Ah, good to know. Thanks Maggie!
Scottmerrick Oh: /that terminology is one of the best "tricks" I have heard
Exosius Woolley: can someone capture it in chat?
scottmerrick: "synchronous online learning environments"
scottmerrick: :)
Dancer Morris: when I was in 8th grade I was only 12; I would have been ineligible for her project
Bjorlyn Loon: we post a transcript each week, Exosius
scottmerrick: instead of "Second Life," or "Virtual Environments"
Prospero Linden: Heh
Fleep Tuque: The age barriers are difficult to navigate for sure, Dancer.
Prospero Linden: You're only supposed to troll the freebie places for 3 weeks, and buy hair for 3 weeks? Uh oh....
Bjorlyn Loon: The transcript will be at http://metanomics.net/archive072808 on Wednesday, thanks to hiredhand transcription.
Fleep Tuque: Same with seniors in highschool approaching the magic 18 years old threshold.
Hydra Shaftoe: I've never bought hair! D:
Syzygy Merlin: yes, some seniors in hs are even 19
scottmerrick: @Hydra, keep holding out, you may set a record!
Dancer Morris: in urban districts where a significant percentage of the student body is held back at least once that one is HUGE
CDB Barkley: Amazing how all of the avatars physically resemble their RL persons ;-)
Be Ewing: /Question: will there ever be a time when all of Second Life (in same main grid) will be able to accommodate all ages? ... like in Real Life ... this age classification seems to be very limiting to including our children and grandchildren
Bjorlyn Loon: REAL LIFE EDUCATION IN SECOND LIFE is a Linden Lab sponsored group for real life educators and academics using Second Life for real life education and research. Please use this group to find collaborators, ask questions, and share information about upcoming educational events.
Dancer Morris: you might have some ineligible juniors, let alone seniors
Bjorlyn Loon: TO JOIN the REAL LIFE EDUCATION IN SECOND LIFE GROUP ::|:: Touch this colored text to open the group window, and then click JOIN secondlife:///app/group/5eab5893-dfa6-905b-4386-011077994d3d/about/
Scottmerrick Oh: We _are_ the looooooong tail lol
Syzygy Merlin: many adult/youth partnership projects would like a place to work in SL
Dancer Morris: I'd like to see some mixed-age areas in Second Life... though they would have to be monitored carefully
Bjorlyn Loon: HUB2 http://hub2.org/
Leisa Zessinthal: Thanks for the link Bjorlyn!
Veritas Variscan: Yes
ClareLane: check out the LIVE GRID what he's talking about right now
ClareLane: it grew out of that
Bjorlyn Loon: My pleasure Leisa.
Fleep Tuque: This is interesting topic, Pathfinder, we're finding similar success in the city of Cincinnati, involving students at the university with civic organizations in the city - it's a great tool for strenghtening partnerships and relationships.
Veritas Variscan: Emerson, Boston Redevelopment Authority, Harvard
Fleep Tuque: I'd love to see a project like that grow here!
Veritas Variscan: hm, cool
Veritas Variscan: Yes.
NergizK: That sounds like a wonderful idea for using virtual worlds (hub2.com)
Fleep Tuque: Tackling some of the tougher issues in the city, would be very exciting work.
Maggie Marat: collaboration is the key1
Veritas Variscan: Modeling , yes, Fleep
Dancer Morris: followthrough is the other key!
Fleep Tuque: /me nods.
TommyJW Ninetails: is this recorded - can we ask questions, now or later?
Dancer Morris: The first round of Hub2 did some nice work, and then the end of the semester came along
Bjorlyn Loon: Designing, teaching and administering classes in immersive environments:
SIMTEACH WIKI: http://www.simteach.com/wiki/index.php?title=Main_Page
Olando7 Decosta: QUESTION: is their a comprensive database, for the audience at large, where one can find what types of educations are concretely available in second life?
Maggie Marat: and the skills and relationships are carrrying over to RL
Veritas Variscan: /me would like to hear about BRIDGING
Veritas Variscan: the move from 17 to over 18
Veritas Variscan: I think we need a transitional program, and would be interested in getting involved
Scottmerrick Oh: /that's key to the TG initial concept, and it's a very novel approach to a youth student platform :)
Olando7 Decosta: QUESTIONS: specifying: a database, not from educators for other educators, but for potential users who are not actually educators themselves but potential students
Bjorlyn Loon: TO ASK YOUR QUESTIONS, type them in open local chat. Preface it with the word QUESTION:
Bjorlyn Loon: GLOBAL KIDS' Best Practices in Using Virtual Worlds For Education: http://www.holymeatballs.org/pdfs/BestPractices.pdf
Veritas Variscan: QUESTION: probably for Pathfinder - are there any projects/initiatives for BRIDGING?
Emily Ramer: Question: what was the first step that youtook toget your board of Ed on board?
Coreina Grace: /me w00ts
North Lamar: "Best practices" or "Some Practices"?
Scottmerrick Oh: /i heard that one solution is having those 18 yearolds get a background check themselves
Fleep Tuque: North, it's a good document, what Global Kids have identified as some Best Practices
Prospero Linden: So 12th grade hasn't been faced yet....
ClareLane: Fleep, it is! http://ImmersiveEducation.org
JenzZa Misfit: how sad ! they just get booted ? to adult land !
Dancer Morris: and she didn't address the question of 8th graders who are too young
Veritas Variscan: Yes, there really needs to be a formalized way of bridging
TommyJW Ninetails: What (if any) roll may non-profits and small business play it the future of education in this format? And how is Linden Labs encourging that?
Elizabeth Spieler: is there any plan to help high school kids?
Paradox Olbers: I find it sad that at 18 currently, they are exiled from all their sl friends
ClareLane: We had kids who had just transitioned speak att ISTE several months ago
Veritas Variscan: :-)
Veritas Variscan: right-o
ClareLane: we all thought the same thing -they need a bridge
Veritas Variscan: right, and many freshmen have not yet turned 18
Kathy Dryburgh: We have the problem at the early end...8th graders don't all turn 13 until later in 8th grade.
Zen Zeddmore: opensim and opengrid may be the end game for educators. SL may be too commercial for this venue.
Dancer Morris: not to mention that high school students often take university classes now
Veritas Variscan: but I want to know about bridging more
Veritas Variscan: these kids come out of TG rich, resplendent
Veritas Variscan: they must be retained
ClareLane: I refuse to believe that SL won't work
ClareLane: it will! It will just take time to do it right
Alexandria Knight: Are there service plans and policies for all of these sites posted somewhere? We have one for the UCLA Library in SL, that I could share if others are interested.
Maggie Marat: They want to see the soundness of the pedagogy
Zen Zeddmore: any school could have their own islands. they could also have open meeting areas for international collaborations.
Veritas Variscan: Ok, so after SLCC is over - sounds like a project, baby !
Be Ewing: /and I would like to include my grandchildren too -- and as virtual reality expands -- it seems so artificial to have this age discrimination policy in place
Prospero Linden: Heh.
Thunder Insippo: /me would do that!
Prospero Linden: /me goes to meetings in pajamas all the time nowadays :)
Dancer Morris: the challenge -- how do we create an all-ages world without also turning it inot a PG world?
Bjorlyn Loon: Just a name for the show, SIG
Veritas Variscan: Yes, Paradox, so much of the success of LL and Sl is tied to retention
Dancer Morris: turning it into, that is :)
Veritas Variscan: this is a microcosm of that issue
ClareLane: Claudia and Path are working on it \
Growing Wise: ... and travel budgets
TommyJW Ninetails: Can't federal deficuit spending be used.. this must have more long term value then killing strangers
ClareLane: none of this is new to them -they hear it over and over
Veritas Variscan: it cannot be called age discrimination fairly, in defense of LL
ClareLane: they are invested in the prospect
Paradox Olbers: Prospero, the old Dilbert dilemna - "what color bathrobe should i wear today?" re telecommuting
Dancer Morris: youth discrimination?
Veritas Variscan: it is a matter of protection and sobriety and needs to be applauded, while Residents come up with solutons, hopefully in concert with educational directors at LL
Zen Zeddmore: they say that killing stragers it usefull becaus you get to take their stuff.
Irah Anatine: can't sl help making music and art costs lower?
Prospero Linden: Heh... measuring educational achievement in general is very difficult. I've heard lots of teachers complain about all the NCLB tests, for example....
Veritas Variscan: @Clare Lane: Yes, it must be a constant stream of questions for them
Scottmerrick Oh: /me claps wildly
Elizabeth Spieler: bravo
Fleep Tuque: /me nods.
ClareLane: I'm still looking for a full time middle school teaching job on line for those very reasons
Pathfinder Linden: /me also claps wildly
TommyJW Ninetails: yes, the proper use of SL type technology would reduce costs .. from transpertaion costs .. all overhead costs
Veritas Variscan: Oh please - don't even get me STARTED on NCLB
Veritas Variscan: It's all about engagement.
Veritas Variscan: WTG Maggie
Veritas Variscan: blecccch
Cindy Ecksol: Peggy, is your district also involved in ThinkQuest? If so, are you seeing any crossover between SL and ThinQuest projects?
Hydra Shaftoe: Schools dont want to trust kids to use a computer unsuprivised. they're liable for anything bad that happens, at least in Alabma
Clare Lane: /me BOO!
Fleep Tuque: laugh
Hydra Shaftoe: I dunno about other states but this simply wont work here. the state laws and statues require bussing kids to school
Elizabeth Spieler: I am forced to home school my kid - so I see this as future schools
Veritas Variscan: /me guffaws...NCLB has trashed so much it can barely be explained
Clare Lane: /me agrees with Prospero we need to get rid of the BS that's called acciuntability
Dancer Morris: but you CAN'T watch everything that kids do on their computers -- not if you have anything like enough computers anyway
Prospero Linden: /me thinks we need to bring some accountability to accountability.
Elizabeth Spieler: perhaps parents don't trust their kids :shrugs:
Zen Zeddmore: in a FL classroom how can kids mute the disrupters?
Clare Lane: we need knew ways AND new things!
ClareLane: yes then you need to convince administrators who are afraid of those scores and what they mean that constructivist methods are real and make sense
Dancer Morris: hee -- I could have used Mute in some RL classrooms!
Clare Lane: *new*
ClareLane: Path, talk to CLaudia and come to NECC next year
Veritas Variscan: /me grins at Pathfinder
Maggie Marat: Not investigated ThinkQuest yet URL?
ckaeo: We are in Second Life, a nonprofit, and work with hundreds of high schools across the nation with the the Senior Project, a nationally recognized graduation by exhibition program. Of course many of the seniors are in a transitional and transformational stage. Many are 18, some older and many are 17. We would love to entertain conversations with someone about a senior student's access and the possibilities working with kids this age.
NergizK: I agree, John, finding educators doing projects in SL is not easy
Scottmerrick Oh: /me suggests to Clare that'll never happen as long as there's a public fund being tapped for the education or as long as there's bureaucracy
TommyJW Ninetails: create tools that are simple to use in SL, a wiki based objects and tool catalog, and let'm go
Maggie Marat: www.ramapoislands.edublogs.org
Bjorlyn Loon: lol Dancer... I was one of those kids who always had their hand raised. =)
Scottmerrick Oh: /claps in ClareLane's general direction
TommyJW Ninetails: once students start generating content .. where will it stop?
Bjorlyn Loon: A GREAT SET OF EDUCATION ARTICLES AT MetaVersEd Ltd. http://web.mac.com/peggysheehy/MetaVersEd_/Articles.html
Elizabeth Spieler: tommy we will figure out ufo's
Dancer Morris: I'm not thinking of those, Bjorlyn -- I'm thinking more of the school version of griefers
Bjorlyn Loon: AND MORE ARTICLES AT http://www.metaversedl.org/othartcls.htm THANKS MAGGIE!
Fleep Tuque: There's definitely an evolution that new practitioners in SL go through, from recreating the familiar to beginning to explore the real affordances of the platform.
Growing Wise: .... unfortunately most school aged students are not eligable for SL
Dancer Morris: my grade school existence would have been much easier with mute and no-push
Bluewave Ogee: See http://www.educatorscoop.org
Hydra Shaftoe: NCLB attempts to legislate kids into all being the same. When I was growing up kids were divides into several levels - gifted, advanced, regular classes, and 'tarded. And that actually worked.
NergizK: A list or directory of all educational projects and educators would be great
Growing Wise: eligible *lol*
RavenPhoenix Zenovka: /lol @Dancer
Scottmerrick Oh: /thanks to ISTE, DEN, metanomics, NMC, et al, there is no such thing as the lone teacher
Elizabeth Spieler: some just don't know how to get involved
Veritas Variscan: oh yes, and the possibilities for collaboration across disciplines and team-teaching - extraordinary
Zen Zeddmore: and for educators and homeschoolers the 3dprinting tech would allow them to share hardware as welll as virtual things.
Fleep Tuque: Agreed Scott!
50 Winx: Be aware that there are political forces at work that would like to censor SL altogether and are taking the argument the SL exposes children to porn. If anyone listened to the House of Representatives hearring on Second Life, you will remember that this was a concern voiced by conservatives.
Maggie Marat: WE SHAre!
Prospero Linden: Isn't sharing theft? :)
Clare Lane: /? what about the educational builds on the main grid that we can't access for students, like NOAA?
Zen Zeddmore: there's porn in SL?
Farqot Gustafson: Adult education here is much the same
Elizabeth Spieler: they rock in sl because there is trust
Hydra Shaftoe: Home schooling is almost universally equated with religous fanatics in my area. That or people who want to jerk their kids out of regular schools so they dont have to be around black children. And of course either way the kids dont get an education.
Maggie Marat: NOAA is willing to share as is NASA
Growing Wise: NOAA is awesome! ... and NASA stuff
JenzZa Misfit: Fleep ! woot ! lol
TommyJW Ninetails: there could be a pairing .. older SL students partner up with new SL students..
Elizabeth Spieler: hydra I home school with no religion in it :shrugs:
ClareLane: sharing=coping
Scottmerrick Oh: /we 'play well together'
Elizabeth Spieler: I don't know how to get my home schooled child in sl
Prospero Linden: Is that the picture I think it is?
Pathfinder Linden: /me nods at Prosero
Fleep Tuque: /me laughs!
Geo Meek: /saving a little Gas?
Fleep Tuque: Geo, I think that's a perspective being pushed more heavily in the business community than the edu community - that using virtual worlds for edu is an ecological solution to all the driving we do.
Dizzy Banjo: i once saw meta linden make a prim model of the increased size of the asset server over 3 years.. i was amazing
Zen Zeddmore: I admire any parent who can guide thier kids well enough to engage them through all the areas of education. My kids just whine untill it gets too frustrating
Dancer Morris: whereas around here home-schooling is mostly associated with the leftover hippies who don't like the culture of the schools
Dizzy Banjo: it*
Maggie Marat: YES! Sense of space
Growing Wise: Pathfinder -- "SL Kids" ever? ....... 7-12 say?
Prospero Linden: CG Linden is working on a model of our system server architecture.
Elizabeth Spieler: zen I follow the guidelines of Lakeside High school, the one Bill Gates and Paul Allen attended
Maggie Marat: can really set te tone
Elizabeth Spieler: the world is our classroom
SIGjunkie Bing: /pathfinder...I think this is a great perspective that you participate in your own environment frequently.
Clare Lane: Middle school aged kids 11-14
sheri42: SL moves participants into citizenship through: connections, collaboration, community, commitment
Bjorlyn Loon: Nice to see Claudia here =)
Claudia Linden: ;D
Clare Lane: HI C!
Hydra Shaftoe: I dont think that works just because one of the big points of going to a public school is learning to deal with bullies, gangbangers, and the other dregs of society. It's all a big social education that you need as part of growing up.
Zen Zeddmore: I look forward to the actuallity of that. Once we have adequate wearable computers then kids can really taake the classroom with them into the world.
Bluewave Ogee: Hi, Claudia! :-)
Bjorlyn Loon: We'll be coming your way as we try to work out a show on Teen Second Life, Claudia.
Fleep Tuque: /me listens intently to this answer.
Alexandria Knight: How about iPhones...
Elizabeth Spieler: Zen my kid has a hand held pc, her cell phone
Fleep Tuque: ;)
Dancer Morris: the way to deal with bullies is for society to break the bully culture... one of my real disappointments with the school system is that so few try
Maggie Marat: absolutely! Food fro creativity
TommyJW Ninetails: most parents could benifit from some guidence in helping teach (read raise) thier kids. Why not on SL workshops?
Zen Zeddmore: can she program it?
Fleep Tuque: /me nods!
Elizabeth Spieler: tommy that would be very helpful
Clare Lane: /me nods too
Fleep Tuque: Some of the best tools we use on U of Cincinnati's campus came from entrepreneurs in SL
Claudia Linden: The educational discount Linden Lab offers continues to demonstrate the LL commitment to education.
Hydra Shaftoe: Nah the way to handle a bully is to do it the way I did it. Just open up on him like a windmill in a tornado behind the cafeteria. Never caused me any more problems.
Elizabeth Spieler: tommy I consult a child psychologist - otherwise my child and I would be divided from just outright ignorance
Geo Meek: /the students well teach us
Dancer Morris: so often schools end up punishing the victims of bullies instead of the troublemakers
Sonja Strom: /me claps
Clare Lane: /me excellent point Peggy
TommyJW Ninetails: I would go.. my 6 year old only goes so far by using a pokie stick
Elizabeth Spieler: geo and alot of parents can't understand that concept
Hydra Shaftoe: I beat the tar out of Gary :)
Penelope Drucker: Peggy and Kathy!!! ROCK!!!
KJ Hax: Yay Kathy!
Dancer Morris: Hydra, your trick doesn't work so well when you are the smallest student in the class
RavenPhoenix Zenovka: WOOT! Go, Peggy! Awesome as usual!!
Irah Anatine: amazing show:)
Penelope Drucker: thank you for that!!
PetGirl Bergman: .-'`'-. APPLAUSE APPLAUSE .-'`'-.
Bluewave Ogee: "edu-trepreneurs" :-)
JenzZa Misfit: oh boy !
Olando7 Decosta: :)
Bjorlyn Loon: nice Kevni!
JenzZa Misfit: ( I still need to google that for spelling ! )
NergizK: Not sure I understood this definition :)
Paradox Olbers: shouldn't that segment be called "Connect the GreenDots"?
Bluewave Ogee: edupreneurship is the relentless pursuit of opporutnity ... :-)
Geo Meek: /me laughs.
ClareLane: esp love the "without regard to" my principal already despises me for making him work/think too hard about technology and how we teach
Penelope Drucker: that is a super definition
Bjorlyn Loon: MARGARET D. CORBIT
Manager, Research Outreach Director, SciCentr.org: http://host.scicentr.org/people/mdc7//
Dancer Morris: heck, they're even out of the reach of many schools for adults! I once thought about putting together an adult-education class about Second Life, until I realized that the school didn't have the necessary computing infrastructure
Paradox Olbers: /me grins at Jzz
eggshell Burks: I just arrived
Nolligan Nino: /me nods
Tab Scott: Exceelent point, Robert
Fleep Tuque: /me nods at Prospero.
joaoa: I am here, too, Nergiz. :)
Dancer Morris: they didn't have computers with the necessary graphics, nor enough bandwidth for a classroom full of students in SL
Fleep Tuque: I think we have to make that assumption
Maggie Marat: If you had asked me for a teacher i could have brought them LOL
Nolligan Nino: I work in special ed - talk to me :-)
Fleep Tuque: Time is precious everywhere. ;)
Knowclue Kidd: Right on Professor Bloomfield!!!
Michele Mrigesh: Great program...thank you
eggshell Burks: yup.. at risk students in Seattle here
Scottmerrick Oh: ...and 5 years passess faster and faster, ya'll
Hydra Shaftoe: yeah Mobile County has that problem. They're on a wireless system because so many schools are on islands. The bandwidth has been strained since 2001, and they're still using the same system
Olando7 Decosta: /me applauds
Robins Hermano: When will transcript be ready?
Alexandria Knight: Terrific program! Very thought-provoking.
Maggie Marat: HERE HERE
Alexandria Knight: Thank you!
Bevan Whitfield: wonderful show!! thank you everyone!
Elizabeth Spieler: Michele Seattle has lakeside school with a 100% success rate
Emily Ramer: thank you!
Maggie Marat: AMEN!
Sonja Strom: @Robins, normally the transcripts are posted about Thursday.
Eilock Clavenham: thank you for the ideas
eggshell Burks: yay, Dr. Bloomfield
Robins Hermano: Thanks Sonja
Dancer Morris: could be worse -- can you imagine the bandwidth demands for SLCC??
NergizK: Thanks! This was interesting
sheri42: thanks
RavenPhoenix Zenovka: Great show!
Sonja Strom: ***** APPPPPPPLLLLAAAUUUSSSSEEEEEEE***********
Olando7 Decosta: thanks! great show...
Frans Tomsen: thank you robert - great show!
eggshell Burks: applause
Sonja Strom: very interesting
TommyJW Ninetails: teachers need a tool that will alloww self motivated, self directed students to be able to take off. How can SL be tailered for this purpose?
Bevan Whitfield: thank you Cindy!
Scottmerrick Oh: Woowooooo!
Sonja Strom: thanks Cindy!
TommyJW Ninetails: ty - great..
Beatnik Sage: cool - that's great - cause I'm doing a presentation soon
Veritas Variscan: Thanks, Bjorlyn
